    Stem FAQ's

There are really only two bar diameter standards these days, 31.8mm and 35mm.

Make sure you find out which one your current bars are!

Almost all forks nowadays have a 1 1/8" steerer tube at the point where the stem attaches.

There are a few forks still around with a 1.5" steerer but it's quite unlikely you need to worry about this.

You can always measure your current stem/steerer if you want to be extra sure. (1 1/8" is about 28.5mm)

This is very tough for us to answer but somewhere in the vicinity of your fork offset is generally a good place to start.

Remember, a longer stem doesn't really make up for a bike that is too short for you (and vice versa). It affects other things as well, namely handling.

We refer to this as "stack", and it's 38mm on all of our stems. (Apart from the direct mount of course.)

As much as possible! Your steerer should only be about 3mm shy of the top of the stem. (Just enough for the lip of the top cap to clear)

Pro tip: the steerer goes entirely through the stem and sticks out the top by about 3mm. Then use a headset spacer on top. This is how we build our bikes here at Chromag HQ.

You can read the full user guide here, but making sure everything is clean is a great start.

Follow torque specs, and make sure the faceplate has an equal gap top and bottom.

Handlebar markings only get you so far, if you want to be super accurate, get out the tape measure!

If something is creaking it's almost always due to dirt and dust. Take everything apart and clean. This would also be a good time to inspect for damage.

If you have a crash and tweak your bar angle, for the love of god loosen your stem when setting them straight. It also goes without saying to give your bike a good look over after a crash, especially the front end.

It's never a bad idea to replace your stem bolts each year (you'd be surprised how corrosive sweat is). We sell replacement bolt kits at a very reasonable price.

    Another quality component from Chromag

Chromag has quickly became one of my favorite MTB brands. The components Ive brought so far have all been top quality. Hope to get myself a frame soon enough.

I was running a old 35mm straitline SSC stem on my DJ bike, brought some new bars recently and figured It was time to upgrade my stem as well. Loved my straitline stem but it was feeling outdated and highly faded (red to pinkish).
I brought a black 40mm hifi v2... I know the modern trend is running the most compact stem you can these days but im 6'4" so wanted to go back to a slightly longer stem, plus I like the idea of matching stem length to fork offset.
With the new chromag stem in hand the many improvements over my old straitline stem are highly evident.
I was shocked to see just how much slimmer and compact the HIFI v2 stem is, its quite incredible really... the steer tube clamp profile of the hifi v2 stem is so much slimmer in comparison to the straitline in all dimensions, its what id descirbed as mirco compact in comparison... it looks so sleek and classy compared to the more bulky and kinda industrial styling of the straitline.

The smooth rounded edges all over the stem are a vary pleasing feature compared to the sharp styling of the straitline, Seeing the stem in person I truly like it much more then i thought i would. and ive gotta say, it just feels safer in a way, if you ever happen to bash into it (espeically as a male rider!!) I especially like that the bar clamp edges are rounded off as well, its one of those small details that makes a world of difference... even just running my new bars for a couple weeks on the old straitline stem, the stem left visible marking or scores on the bar, from the stems sharp bar clamp edges so the rounded off edges of the Chromag stem makes so much sense and are a welcome improvement.

Lastly I gotta say, Chromag might have the best logo there is in the MTB world, I absolutely love the grizzly logo or "Chromag bear"... it simply looks good on everything from frames, components to clothing.
they truly nailed it with there logo... looking down and seeing a bear on your bike just feels so gnarly and bada$$... simply put its an inspiring logo.

Bottomline, if your running an older stem, any of the Chromag stems are sure to be an improvement. I'd highly recommend the HIFI v2 to anyone looking for a new stem.

    Small but sturdy!

As a Chromag athlete this is my current favorite stem! The 31mm reach offers exceptional control of the bike. If you’re looking for a quick and snappy feel, I’d recommend this stem!
